No, I don’t actually think it can. The old bitch is pretty far gone. But it can help people that may be falling into the crazies at their earlier stages. Dimebon, (димебон) if you haven’t been under a rock, is a drug used to treat allergies1 in Russia. A startup in San Fran has discovered and announced that this simple indole compound can treat Alzheimer’s with a significant advantage over placebos. As I understand, it has been around for over 20 years, thus the patent is well expired. It’s thus bizarre that the company promoting the drug – Medivation, should be having such terrific luck with their stock. Of course, they’ve filed a huge patent for the specific treatment of Alheimer’s as well as multiple derivations (i.e. the functionality of R, R’ and R” are protected, though I’m not sure if it isn’t also a part of the ‘formulation’ business which, as I’ll get to, is going to make thing billionaires.) What’s going to keep this drug from getting all over America and ruining Medivation? It’s small, dirt cheap and the structure has no patent. The answer is, of course, because it’s not approved for use in the US, which means it will be prescription only here. Since the Americans rightfully pay the lion’s share to the drug companies that uncover these things, that’ll be just fine for them. I say Medivation is a STRONG BUY.
I personally congratulate Medivation for their work. While the compound certainly isn’t novel, the gusto and foresight to undergo phase II clinical trials on something that could revolutionize the way neurodegenerative diseases are treated is well worth it. Of course, Russians take no issue with dumping and shipping drugs into the US despite American demands that they don’t do it. It’s just their way of loving us…
1It’s both an antihistamine and a sleeping aid. So, they’ll be horribly druged up, which may net in zero returns in terms of how accessible the patient is mentally… Which may explain the dropout rate of over 30%. Then again, these people DO have Alzheimer’s, which may also explain it.

Listen, I just red somewhere that there is this wonderful new Alzheimer drug. I forgot what’s the name of it.
It’s this one…

Why are you the way you are?
I happened – You can’t reduce me to a set of circumstances, Clarice.
That sounds like it could be used in a Doctor Who episode. Speaking of which… I better find Season 3 when I’m back in the old country.
I still have nightmares about those Daleks. Who knew that an upright vacuum cleaner could threaten the destruction of the universe?
It’s especially bad if it never looses suction.
“Falling into the crazies?” Please. Let’s be respectful and not fall into 19 century beliefs about a progressive and fatal DISEASE.
Terbinafine was the world’s thousand-pound gorilla of human antifungal agents for almost two decades… but not in the US. The FDA vigorously excluded terbinafine for having “unknown hazards”. The domestic market for “safe and effective” antifungals was awesome.
Terbinafine cures vaginal candidiasis in less than a week with 99% success. Prior meds had 3-week treatment cycles with ~45% cure rates. Terbinafine’s hazard was not unknown at all.
Why didn’t Women’s Lip decry their patriarchy-impressed cottage cheese crotches? The dalectic of manifesto does not embrace disempowering obsessions like book learning. When the last male chauvinist pig is smothered in chintz, who will change the oil?
Uhhhh…Diflucan? Single pill. Done.
Fluconazole (Diflucan) discovery story is also a marvelous example of a good drug design, especialy if you compare the structure of fluconazole the competing azole antifungal drugs like itraconazole and ketoconazole.
The group at Pfizer that discovered Fluconazole many years ago went for simplicity, small size, not too greasy molecule and did the afficacy stude directly on live animals. (I think Candida infection of guinea pigs).
In Soviet Russia, Alzheimer’s forget you!
So how does the stuff work? Is it some kind of cholinergic? And if I may, a follow-up. Why do H1 antagonists almost always hit muscarinic receptors as well? Are these receptors so similar that we can’t design drugs with specificity? (I’m looking at you, Benadryl!)
I’ll tell you what. If someone knew that, I would love to know too. Though, I know this: Antihistamines are antidepressants and were used as models for antidepressants; a slanted view of this model lead to the development of Prozac. Antihistamines are mysterious things, you know, doing different shit in different parts of the body, and almost certainly different parts of the brain.
I’ve a grandmother that needs this wonder. Any information on the wherebouts ??
I don’t know where you can buy it. I’ve seen about 30 Google hits for people looking for it. Why are there no online Russian pharmacies for illegal prescription download v1@g4a?
I just went back to the old country for a vacation and my friends who don’t have jobs and live with their parents told me that v1@g4a and ecstasy cocktails are the new big thing at parties. Sometimes I miss the hedonistic, morality free wasteland of the old country… Are there any online Russian pharmacies offering that sort of stuff?
